Movie breakdown: Hatchet 3 (2013) (Decker Shado film review)

Hatchet 3: Hatchet 3 Horror Film is the third installment in the Hatchet film series. It chronicles Victor Crowley's continuing adventures and his rampage through Louisiana's Honey Island Swamp. Kane Hodder stars as Victor Crowley, Brian Quinn plays Deputy Winslow and Rileah Vanderbilt is Misty.

The film's greatest strength is the use of real-world special effects. Unlike many modern horror movies that rely heavily on CG effects, Hatchet 3 features mostly practical makeup effect and sets--resulting in some truly terrifying scenes throughout the movie.

The cast gives a solid performance with Kane Hodder being the most intimidating villain. It's like an '80s slasher movie, with the dialogue being movie review Hatchet 3 a bit too funny and snarky. There are some really funny moments that offer a comic contrast to the heart-wrenching action.

Unfortunately, because the budget is so small (reportedly $1 million) the majority of locations used that are featured in the movie are re-used locations from earlier films in the series. For example, the same boathouse was used twice in the film. Many of these locations feel like they were reused from previous films from this series. This can make it seem like it's all too familiar for those who have seen Hatchet or Hatchet 2

Overall, I was impressed by Hatchet 3 even though it felt very similar to prior entries in this series--it provided lots of bloody thrills as well as entertaining performances from its cast members.
